1. Would Best Buy be likely to hire a 22 year old with no previous experience?

2. Will I need a resume of some kind? Like I said, I have no prior work experience, so what would I do about this?

3. Is Best Buy an ideal place for a first job?

4. Is it possible to become a full time employee immediately? Or do they start you off as a part-timer, and then once you've been there a while, they allow you to become a full-timer?

Best Answer:

no: I don't see why they wouldn't hire you although you likely would not be the first choice if there are other candidates with some job experience. As far as a resume goes, you don't really need one in this case. You don't really have anything to put on a resume except for your education history which will be asked for in the job application. Chances are that the job application is filled out online, so if there is an option to attach a resume then you could make one up with your education on it, but this is pointless in my opinion and there is no point in drawing more attention to the fact that you have never held a job. As far as part time or full time goes, it really just depends on what they are hiring for. However my guess would be that based on your lack of experience that you would be hired on as part time (less than 30 hours a week) at least initially. Full time (30+ hours) would require that Best Buy offer you health insurance benefits. The problem is that your lack of job experience puts you in the realm of probationary employment for a period of time. That's not to say you can't be hired on for full time right away, just that I would be very surprised if you were. Also, asking if Best Buy is an ideal first job is irrelevant in your situation. You need job experience wherever you can get it.

Other answer:

no:
You've hopefully done *something* in your life you can put on a resume – doesn't have to be employment, student clubs, volunteer work, hobbies that are relevant etc. can count. It is a good starter job, if you know what you're talking about – if you're deeply knowledgeable about technology or gaming from your hobbies and can show that, stress that. You're not likely to become FT immediately – they will want to test you out. Either way, you'll be on probation to start, so be prepared to hit the ground running.

Also be aware the new year is a horrible time for retail – they hire lots up to Xmas and lay off many after, because everyone's sick of shopping at that point and has no money. So, retail might not be your best bet. Consider other options as well – don't just put all your eggs in one basket, that's a great way to remain unemployed.
