So I work in retail and I m working there seasonally. Today we had a woman come in who wanted to do an online return and I was the one who was doing her return. Well our online returns are different from our regular returns and so instead of scanning the barcode on the receipt, we have to type the order number instead. When I started typing the order number in, she was talking to me and complaining about how they had to do something similar at Dillard s. Well I thought she was just kinda venting out her annoyance with me and I was being super polite and then she started raising her voice and becoming hostile and at this point I said "I m sorry are you upset with me?" And she responds with "damn right I m upset with you" so she was mad that I wasn t scanning her order sheet to return the items and instead I pulled up the transaction with her order number because that s the only way we can do online returns. Well she starts yelling at me calling me stupid and being very hostile. I even showed her the screen and scanned the barcode to show her that nothing would come up and that I had to type in the order number. She still yells at me and then once I return her items she goes "let s see if you were smart enough to do it correctly." This made me so upset and made me tear up so my manager came over and explained the exact same thing I did to the lady. I just can t get over everything she said to me. I m super sensitive and I just need advice on how to get over this situation.
Get over it. She was the big stupid infant who just had to have her way because of the 8 BILLION people on this planet, SHE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO IS IMPORTANT.
Don't be upset over anything other than the fact that you do not have a video of her melt down to put on YouTube to humiliate her.
You were right, and she was wrong, and the fact that she has made you somehow feel that you were wrong means that she is a heartless, evil, hell-fire bully that belongs in a special, and very uncomfortable place in Satan's rectum.
Imagine her there every time you start to feel bad.
Me, I would have walked away and had my manager deal with it immediately. You are a nice seasonal person and the management is there and trained to deal with the human filth year round!
I ALWAYS hated working retail the day after Christmas to a few days after New Years. People just don't understand and aren't patient.
Next time just call your manager over, don't argue with the customer, have them explain things when someone gets impatient like that. The customer isn't going to care what your proceedures are, you can't fix their mental issue.
It may have helped to just say computer software that handles our online returns are different than the store bought returns, it goes to a different database that doesn't use the scan bars. Just a bit more info this way than if you said it 'doesn't work the same'. But then again it may not have made a difference anyway.
You'd better grow some thicker skin if you're going to work with the public. There are nasty people like this woman everywhere. I'm sorry that happened to you.
The person who yelled at you is the scum of the earth. It is her problem and not yours. Forget that she exists as it will just bother your brain. You were right. She was a total 'Yenta'. You did everything right. She was just a hating hater who hates to love and loves to hate.
Do what my wife does…draw a picture of her, yell at it and then tear it up, throw it in the trash and dump some spoiled food on top of it. (she also says some descriptive bad words>)
If you got your manager involved, good and all you can do is try to move on. Clearly her life is bad at the moment so think about what she might have going on in her life rather than how she upset you. Some members of the public are just impossible to deal with but as long as you did everything correctly, with your manager to back you up, so be it.
You handled the situation well. Your manager should have come to your aid earlier.
You deserve a commendation and a raise. They should keep you on permanently.
look at it this way YOU were doing as your job required and doing it correctly as the job requires, SHE being an annoying customer who was trying to do something that normally would not be done(in the defense of your store who accomodated her by refunding a sale that was not done in the store)
she was the one here being obnoxious, you were doing what you were instructed to do and with courtesy as well
be proud of yourself that you didn't resort to her kind of behaviour
