My credit score is 540. How do I improve to 790?

Best Answer:

Michael: Spend the next decade paying every bill in full and on time without being late, not even once. Repay every single penny of every debt that you have in collections.

Hi there,

"Where there's a will, there's a way".

Kudos to you, for you are cautious about your personal finance and credit score. The best way to improve your score is to pay off all your debts in time and in full. Don't apply for new credit and spend only what you can repay.

Most of all, be patient. Don't be eager to see it improve. Set yourself mini goals such as first let it improve till 600 and then till 640 etc.

Remember, "Rome was not built in a day". Your score will improve with time and with dedicated efforts in the right direction.

Good Luck!

We need to know why your score is 540 to even begin to tell you how to recover from it. Bad stuff ages off in 7 years, so it might just be a case of waiting it out.

By doing nothing. Your score is too low for you to be approved to do something to bring it up. It may take up to 7 1/2 years (up to 10 if you have filed for bankruptcy) of doing nothing, before your score is high enough for you to be able to do something to bring up more.
