Question for other authors, do you need to be making a profit off your writing before you can claim expenses on tax returns?

If you claim a loss three out of 5 years, that sets up a red flag for the IRS and you get audited. You can have a business (or write the book) and have a loss, yes, and still claim expenses. Just don't do it multiple years.
