Seasonal/on-call retail employee?

I currently work retail and I ve been hired as a seasonal employee (for Christmas). I get a lot of calls to come to work on days I m not scheduled, and I have said yes to a majority of them. However, I feel guilty whenever some days I have to say no when they call last minute because i want to stay there

I currently work retail and I ve been hired as a seasonal employee (for Christmas). I get a lot of calls to come to work on days I m not scheduled, and I have said yes to a majority of them. However, I feel guilty whenever some days I have to say no when they call last minute because i want to stay there permanently and I m not entitled enough because of the seasonal status. Should I feel this way? Or not as long as I ve tried my best to become reliable?

Don't feel bad about turning down calls to work if you're really not available to do so. But if you do have time, show up. It will build your reputation as being reliable for on calls shifts. You can use that to your advantage when you apply for a permanent position.

If they have any, apply for a more permanent position if that's what you want.
I think you mean try to become more available. Don't feel guilty if you have to say no once in a while when you've all ready made plans to do some thing else, or (don't actually tell them this) if you just don't want to take the shift. Just tell them I'm sorry I can't come in today, I've all ready made plans and let it go.
linkus86:
No. You have no reason to feel guilty and let no one down when you said no. The management is who should feel bad because they weren't able to hire enough help necessary and each call they made to you was their attempt to take advantage of you, which you allowed them to do. You have already proven yourself to be reliable simply by showing up on the days your were originally scheduled.
Stella:
If they're calling you at the last minute, it's either because someone is not coming in as scheduled or your management is screwing up.
So, do what you can, no need to feel guilty about what you can't.

From my exp the permanent employees never said no while being seasonal.
one of them only said no while they’re hired.
