Get a night shift if you can and take an Accounting 101 Principals of Accounting at a nearby school; community college at night or day at University. One night a week (3 hrs) or two part days (1.5 hrs for 2 sessions.) Learning this much will be useful even if you find you don't like it. Continue this way taking the accounting classes as they are available. you are in a government job. See what the requirements are for Accountant I. Try to take the CLEP exams for basic classes–it saves time and money.
I did it this way. I took the state test for accounting and passed #10 and was
hired. I kept taking classes at night until I graduated. It took 7 years but I was an accountant the whole time. 2 promotions and 22+ years later I RETIRED.
