Why do retail customers think cashiers are dumb?

For example, you ring up all of their items, nothing left on the counter (remember that), the customer pays, and then leaves. About an hour later, they come back, angrily accusing you of charging them for something they didn't intend to buy, or accusing you of forgetting to put something in their bag. Remember,

The manager approves the refund and now for all you know, you could've just given away that item for free!!!

most retail stores have security cameras. they can't just return an item with out having it to give back to the store and get a free refund that they didn't purchase.

if the cashier forgot to put an item in the bag, but was rung up already, they would go back to the security cameras to confirm that, then just give the customer the item.

i've worked in retail as a cashier for four years at a department store. and we always make sure the customer is right, before doing something on the spot like that.

And my expectations are not high,

Examples: Some of them have bad hygiene (mostly men),one of them blows his nose with his bare hands, or licks his fingers, then grabs my food.

Sometimes they are on the phone when you arrive and dont say antying (ok maybe not dumb but rude)

They dont know how to give a refund and call the manager or dont even know if they have a product

they see a big line form, and instead of opening a second register, one of them just walks back and forth behind the counter and looks around

I can blame the manager for just refunding the customer, all stores have cameras, I would tell the customer that we would review the video and see if something was left, many times it is just someone that wants to get something for nothing. But as a customer, I have gotten home and had someone elses stuff that THEY paid for in my bag, so mistakes do happen

Customer service work is full of these kind of experiences!
For every great customer, there will be someone who wants to complain, someone who wants to scam the company.

It's SOOO annoying- but you're not getting paid enough to worry about these kind of people.

Develop rhinoceros skin and move on. You have your own values and ethics of honesty and good service, this kind of behaviour won't change you.

I wouldn't see it as my problem. Once the customer leaves, then the customer accepts the items and pay as agreed. Now it's the manager's problem to institute a system of checks to ensure all that is purchased is paid for and all that is paid for is given to the customer. Then you have the customers who don't remember what they bought or paid for.

Some do it not because they think cashiers are dumb,they do it because they are trying to get something for free.

there are scammers like this everywhere and especially during the holidays, the manager is fully aware but if he chooses to keep things smooth and gives them their refund, you can think all you like about it but won't do anything for you in the long run
