Why does living independently cost money?

Other answer:

Ryan:
Because ALL living costs money. And when you live independently, you have to pay for all that yourself. Until then, someone else has been paying for it.

It's also a fact that living by yourself is always more expensive than sharing. Property taxes don't depend on how many people live there. Unless there is a discount for single occupancy – here in the UK, you get 25% off if there's just you living there. But other than that, it's a tax on the PROPERTY, it's the same amount however many adults live there, and you may not even get a discount if the house is empty for whatever reason.

Power bills don't reduce by much if there's only you because it still costs the same to heat or air-condition the room. The rent is still the same amount however many people live there. And cooking for one person is less economical than doing it for more.

Food, clothing, housing, insurance, water, electricity, transportation, internet access – if you don't need all of those things it would be free to live independently, in an abandoned van down by the river with the rest of the people who don't understand the concept of pay as you go.
JetDoc:
It doesn't have to cost money… You can go live in the woods and hunt animals for food, sleep in a cave, make your own clothes and never have to spend a dime. BUT if you want to live and participate in a modern society, then you have to pay for the privilege.
